Use of Ultrasound Devices in Pregnancy and Birth

            Ultrasound is a non ionized irradiation high frequency sound wave (like a microwave), used to gather visual and/or audio fetal information.  It is not the same kind of irradiation as is in an x-ray.  There are two basic methods of use, with variations of intensity within those techniques.  One is Pulse ultrasound which is used for visual imaging.  Another method of use is continuous sound wave used commonly for audio dopplar and EFM (electronic fetal monitor).  Anytime gel is used as a conductor, ultrasound is being used.

            The use of ultrasound has become common practice among medical practitioners over the course of the last fifty years. 

Pros:

Through ultrasound, information can be gathered to determine the babies well being. 

Parents can hear and bond with the baby.

It is quicker to hear with.

Can locate baby’s heart when baby is in strange position.

It can detect fetal hypoxia.

Able to hear fetal heart beat on fat women when substitute methods don’t work.

Cons: 

Increased chance of cesarean.

There are alternatives that are less invasive to the baby which vary

depending upon what it is you are looking for. 

Thorough investigation and questioning,combined with abdominal palpation, and the use of Nagels Rule, a practitioner can quite accurately (often more accurate than ultrasound) determine the Expected Due Date.

The use of a fetoscope (a special type of stethoscope like is used to listen to adult hearts and lungs) can be used to hear fetal heart beat and rhythm throughout pregnancy as well as during fag (however in fag this technique is a tiny more difficult to perform as it requires the mom to hold still at times when she might not want to).

The Cause and Treatment of Infant, Newborn and Baby Gas Problems
